Disaster Medicine

The course focuses on the medical management as well some of the clinical skills required to deal with major incidents and disasters.

The management of the medical effects of major incidents and disasters is one of the most difficult tasks to be performed by medical practitioners. The incidents of such events are increasing world wide and medical staff is often at the forefront of dealing with the effects. This course will provide an approach to dealing with such incidents in terms of both incident management and medical management. Table Top simulations as well as Case Studies and a live exercise will be used to prepare the students for dealing with such an eventuality.
The course is intended for medical doctors and nursing practitioners and other health professionals that may be called upon to play leading roles in both the pre-hospital and hospital response. EMS staff at the intermediate and advanced level would also benefit from the course.
The course will provide the skills to assist with dealing with the medical management of major incidents and disasters. It builds on the basics as taught in the MIMMS and HMIMMS courses and provides first responders as well as heath management with the insight and skills required to deal with major incidents.
Please note that this course forms the starting point for the Disaster Medicine Module and Stream of the MPhil in Emergency Medicine, offered by the Division of Emergency Medicine, University of Cape Town.
