Disaster Medical Response Training (DisMeRT)
This course focuses on the extended principles of deployment into a Disaster area.
Prerequisite is successful completion of the Disaster Medicine course or equivalent

Medical personnel are often called upon to responsd across provincial and/or international borders to offer emergency assistance. The recent earthquakes, tsunamies and other complex humanitarian emergencies are cases in point. Medical staff deployed to such incidents are faced with providing care in an often difficult or hostile environment. This short course will start to address some of the issues and skill that such a response may require. This week-long practical session forms a central part of the DisMeRT Semester Course. As the experiences are often one-on-one, the numbers of participatns are limited to 10. So book early to avoid disappointment! Topics to be covered include, amongst others:
The course is intended for anyone wanting to join a team in a Disaster Area, those involved in Disaster Planning and Preparedness at any Level and for those wanting to pursue the MPhil (EM).
Please note that this short course forms part of one of the modules of the MPhil in Emergency Medicine, offered by the Division of Emergency Medicine, University of Cape Town. One can enroll just for this course, or take it further and complete the full module (15 credits).

- Medical Practice in an Urban Search & Rescue environment
- Confined Space and selected Technical Rescue Topics
- Introduction to basic field veterinary medicine

- Medical considerations of nuclear emergencies
